Dust, this enemy that we mechanically chase away with a wipe of a cloth, without ever really asking ourselves what it is made of. And yet, the answer holds a rather astonishing surprise.
A Rutgers University study has shed light on a fact that is as counterintuitive as it is unexpected: squalene, a compound naturally present in our dead skin which makes up a significant portion of household dust, reacts chemically with ozone present in indoor air. As a result, between 2 and 15% of the ozone in a home would be destroyed by this dust composed of our own skin cells. A figure which takes on its full meaning when we know that ozone, beneficial in the upper atmosphere where it protects us from ultraviolet rays, becomes an irritating and toxic gas once breathed inside a home.
This is a fun paradox to ponder the next time you chase away dust: the same dust that we strive to eliminate discreetly plays a minimal protective role against an indoor pollutant. Be careful, however, not to see this as an excuse to let dust collection slide: this benefit remains marginal and largely outweighed by the well-documented disadvantages of accumulated dust, in particular its capacity to feed entire colonies of dust mites, whose droppings are among the most widespread household allergens.

What this task actually involves


Dusting a piece of furniture involves removing the thin film that settles on horizontal surfaces (shelves, chests of drawers, tables, window sills), paying particular attention to the corners and less accessible areas where dust tends to accumulate more permanently. Allow around 5 minutes per session, a quick gesture but which benefits from being repeated regularly to prevent the dust from thickening and becoming more difficult to remove.

Tips and tricks for effective dusting


The choice of cloth changes a lot of things: a classic dry cloth tends to simply move dust from one place to another, or even resuspend it in the air where it ends up redepositing a few moments later. A lightly dampened microfiber cloth, on the other hand, actually captures particles with its fine, electrostatically charged fibers, rather than sweeping them away superficially.
Working from top to bottom remains the logical rule for this type of task: dusting a high shelf before the furniture located below avoids having to go over a second time on an already cleaned surface. For furniture particularly loaded with objects (knick-knacks, frames, books), removing them temporarily rather than dusting around them provides a much more complete result, as dust tends to accumulate precisely in these difficult-to-access areas.
Finally, dusting before vacuuming, and not the other way around, allows particles dislodged from furniture to be collected on the ground rather than letting them fall onto an already treated surface.

Dust may not be the absolute enemy we imagine, with this slight unexpected benefit against indoor ozone highlighted by Rutgers University. But between this little chemical advantage and the procession of allergens that it continues to harbor, it is better not to relax the effort of the cloth just yet.
