The weed killer we kept in the back of the garage, this miracle solution that solved the weed problem with one spray. Except that in recent years, this simple little gesture has become, without many people really realizing it, a criminal offense in its own right.
According to the DRAAF Centre-Val de Loire, a decentralized state service responsible in particular for agricultural and environmental regulations, the Labbé law has prohibited individuals from purchasing, using and even simply storing synthetic phytopharmaceutical products since January 1, 2019. And contrary to popular belief, this ban is not limited to large gardens or vegetable gardens: it explicitly applies to balconies, terraces and even indoor plants. In other words, this old bottle of chemical weedkiller found at the bottom of a cupboard, even intended to treat a few square meters of exterior paving, falls directly under the scope of these regulations.
The consequences provided for by law are not symbolic. According to the State services responsible for ensuring its application, non-compliance with this ban constitutes a real criminal offense, punishable by a maximum penalty of 6 months' imprisonment and a fine of €150,000. A sanction which, in practice, obviously targets professional uses or the most egregious cases more than the simple occasional individual, but which testifies to the seriousness with which this regulation was thought out. Above all, it marks a turning point in French public policy: after local authorities in 2017, then individuals in 2019, the ban was further extended in 2022 to all private places for collective use, such as campsites or co-ownerships.

What this task actually involves

Weeding a terrace or balcony involves manually or mechanically removing unwanted weeds that grow between the slabs, in cracks or along the edges of exterior surfaces. Allow around 15 minutes for this task, a pace which strongly depends on the season and the level of exposure to the sun of the space concerned.

Tips and tricks for effective pesticide-free weeding

Thermal weeding, using a gas or electric weeder, remains one of the most effective methods and fully compliant with regulations: the intense heat literally bursts the plant cells of young shoots, without leaving any chemical residue on the terrace.
For gravel or sand surfaces, mulching with bark or flax mechanically prevents light from reaching the soil, thus blocking the germination of seeds before they even have a chance to grow. This physical barrier, simple to put in place, considerably limits regrowth in the long term.
For deep, stubborn roots, a weeding knife or root puller allows you to remove the entire root system at once, rather than simply cutting off the visible part which will inevitably grow back a few weeks later.

With a ban explicitly extending to balconies and terraces since 2019, the old reflex of using a can of chemical weedkiller no longer has its place, even in a small outdoor space. Mechanical and thermal solutions, although requiring a little more elbow grease, remain today the only option that is both effective and perfectly legal.
