The living room, this room that we spontaneously associate with relaxation and comfort, soft cushions and cozy blankets to support it. It's hard to imagine that it can compete, in terms of dirt, with the place we traditionally fear the most in a home.
According to a specialized article, the French spend on average 3 to 4 hours per day in their living room, a considerable amount of time which makes it, with the bedroom, one of the most intensively used rooms in the home. This prolonged occupation is not without consequences: according to a source devoted to domestic hygiene, the most contaminated object in a home is not, contrary to what one might imagine, the toilet bowl or any surface in the bathroom, but rather the cushions and throws used in the living room for daily comfort.
This result, as surprising as it may be at first glance, is explained quite logically once we take the time to think about it. Unlike toilets, which are cleaned regularly by reflex and whose smooth surface leaves little hold for micro-organisms, cushions and throws undergo intensive daily use without benefiting from the same systematic maintenance. They absorb perspiration, skin cells, sometimes crumbs from a meal eaten in front of a film, while providing, thanks to their textile texture, a particularly favorable environment for the long-term establishment of bacteria and mites. The simplest test to convince yourself of this remains olfactory: approaching your face to a cushion that has remained unwashed for too long often reveals a musty or musty smell, a fairly clear sign that maintenance is necessary.
What this task actually involves
Tidying up the living room consists of reorganizing cushions, throws and various objects left in disorder over use, putting each item back in its place. Allow approximately 15 minutes for this task, a daily or almost daily schedule being necessary given the intensity of use of this room according to attendance data.
Tips and tricks for a truly maintained living room
Beyond simple visual storage, regularly washing cushion covers and throws in the machine, at a temperature of at least 60°C when the fabric allows it, remains the only truly effective solution against bacterial accumulation identified by domestic hygiene specialists. A simple shake or superficial dusting is not enough to eliminate what is lodged in the heart of the fibers.
Providing closed storage (trunk, basket with lid, low cabinet) for throws and cushions not immediately used limits their continued exposure to ambient dust between two uses, rather than leaving them permanently spread out on the sofa where they continue to accumulate residue and particles.
Adopting the reflex of a quick tidying session at the end of the day, rather than waiting for the accumulation over several days, transforms this task into a light and quick gesture instead of a heavier chore which sets in gradually as the mess accumulates.
With cushions and throws identified as the most contaminated object in the home, even more so than the toilet according to certain studies, the living room deserves much more attention than is generally given to it. Regular tidying up, combined with frequent washing of textiles, remains the best way to fully enjoy this room without worrying about what is really hidden there.
