Tips and tricks for effective descaling
White vinegar remains the simplest and most economical solution: a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar—boiled in the kettle and then left to sit for about thirty minutes—is usually enough to dissolve common deposits. For a coffee maker, running this same mixture through the standard brewing cycle, followed by two or three cycles of clean water to rinse thoroughly, effectively removes limescale buildup from the internal pipes.
Citric acid is an equally effective alternative, particularly appreciated for having a much more neutral odor than vinegar: a tablespoon diluted in hot water, left to work for a few dozen minutes, eliminates most deposits without leaving a lingering aftertaste during subsequent uses.
Adjusting the descaling frequency based on actual water hardness is the smartest approach: in areas where water hardness exceeds 25°f (the threshold at which limescale accumulates rapidly), monthly descaling is not excessive, whereas a household in a soft-water area can easily space out this task without risking damage to their appliances.
